I am a candidate running for the position of bencher of the LSO in the upcoming elections this month. My main goal is to advocate for countless foreign trained lawyers who are currently underrepresented at convocation.
Here are the key issues I stand for:
- Promoting Diversity and Inclusion:
While many benchers advocate for diversity and inclusion, there are negative views surrounding foreign trained lawyers entering the Ontario legal community. I believe it is time to address the barriers faced by new immigrants and foreign trained Canadians seeking entry into the legal profession. We need to push for changes to the discriminatory practices affecting NCA candidates.
- Addressing Rising Costs:
The LSO's budget for full-time employees and organization expenses has increased significantly, leading to rising costs for members. I aim to conduct a thorough review of the LSO's spending to ensure transparency and efficiency. Additionally, I will work towards reducing lawyer licensing fees.
- Easing Over-Regulation:
The burden of over-regulation disproportionately affects small firms and solo practitioners. As a bencher, I will advocate for a collaborative approach with LSO members, working together to reduce unnecessary regulatory burdens.
- Repealing the SOP:
The Statement of Principles (SOP), despite its noble intentions, violates our constitutionally protected right to free expression. While I support diversity and inclusion, I believe coercive speech is counterproductive to these values. It is essential to respect individuals' rights to express their viewpoints without coercion, even if their personal beliefs align with the intended message of the SOP.
Thank you for your time and support, and I am excited about the opportunity to serve you as a Barrister & Solicitor and LSO Bencher Candidate for 2019.
