Motivation Moment: Remember Why You Started

Finding motivation during challenging times is tough, especially for law students, NCA candidates, and licensing candidates who have been facing uncertainties over the last few months. As the world begins to rebuild, there are still many question marks looming ahead regarding online classes/exams, articling placements, and job security.

In the legal industry, the constant drive for progress often overshadows the milestones we've achieved, leaving us focused on the uncertain future. However, it's crucial to take a moment and remember why you embarked on this journey to become a lawyer in Canada. Amidst global events beyond our control, this reflection can help preserve your sense of accomplishment and well-being.

I experienced the significance of this mindset during my first week of law school in the UK. Feeling homesick and questioning my decision, I paused to recall my original goals – to become a lawyer, gain qualifications in multiple jurisdictions, and explore the world while pursuing my career. This remembrance rekindled my motivation, and I embarked on new experiences, forming lasting friendships and cherishing the journey.

I've used this motivation technique throughout my academic and professional pursuits – from law school to NCA exams, LLM, and now preparing for the Ontario and New York Bar exams. Revisiting my initial goals has not only fueled my progress but also allowed me to refine and strengthen them as I grow. Periodically refreshing these goals keeps me motivated and provides clarity for the career path ahead, making it less daunting and uncertain.

As I gain a clearer vision of the lawyer I aspire to be, the practice areas I wish to focus on, and the value of dual jurisdiction qualification, my core goals remain intact. Knowing there is still work to be done propels me forward every day.

So, when faced with overwhelming uncertainty or doubt, take a moment to remember the aspirations that drove you to start this journey. Let them energize you to persevere and guide you in updating your goals to navigate through the fog of uncertainties ahead.
