We congratulate Mary Simon on her appointment as Canada's 30th Governor General
Mary Simon has been appointed as Canada's 30th Governor General, making her the first Indigenous person to hold this position. She began her career in public service in the early 1990s and played a vital role in the Charlottetown Accord negotiations. Additionally, she served as a lead negotiator in establishing the Arctic Council. Furthermore, she contributed to Canada's diplomatic efforts by serving as the country's ambassador to Denmark from 1999 to 2002. Notably, Simon also took on the role of Chancellor at Trent University. Her appointment marks a significant milestone in Canadian history as the first Indigenous individual to assume the position of Governor General.
